The hotel

An enchanting island paradise, once the home of a Carib Indian chief according to legend, Young Island is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Virtually a tropical garden, it consists of 13 acres, home to giant almond, mango, coffee and breadfruit trees. At the heart of it all is the Young Island Hotel, overlooking a beautiful stretch of golden sand. Here, hammocks hang under thatched roofs and the cooling trade winds are ever constant. As is only right when residing on a Caribbean island, non-motorised water sports are offered, including kayaking, pedaloes and dinghy sailing. Just offshore is the Coconut Bar where drinks are served in fresh coconuts — you can swim there and back. Dining at Young Island is a truly romantic experience with meals taken under thatched kiosks near the beach. A sumptuous four-course meal is prepared five nights a week by award-winning chefs with fresh seafood always on the menu. On Wednesdays, it's a local buffet meal and on Saturday, you'll enjoy a barbeque and buffet. Each meal offers six loaves of freshly baked bread — white, coconut, banana, raisin, cinnamon and wheat — it’s a real treat and one they are justly famous for. A fabulous freshwater swimming pool is perfect for cooling dips and there is tennis available day and night on a floodlit court. Spacious, cottage style accommodation is either close to the beach or on a hillside with breathtaking panoramic views.

From the very start this place was terrible and not even worth half the US$650 a night we paid. The web site photos and description are the most misleading we have ever seen. From the very start this place was terrible and not even worth half the US$650 a night we paid. The web site photos and description are the most misleading we have ever seen. They give the impression of luxury when it’s all actually quite basic, and some aspects quite poor. It’s just a five minute ferry ride from the mainland, but on landing at the dock there was nobody to greet us or take our bags - thankfully they are both on wheels. At the reception area it was very hot and humid and we expected a refreshing moist towel as every resort has offered on this six week pan-Caribbean trip, but none was offered, and when I asked I was given some facial tissue. We had bungalow #6, which sat on a point opposite the mainland. Furnished in tropical style there was a living room, bedroom, very small bathroom with an outside shower recess and a patio with plunge pool and a sea front gazebo. The windows had all been left open with the A/C off so it was brutally hot inside. Surely knowing that guests were arriving they should have had it cooled down. The small island has lush vegetation so we went exploring but you cannot go far. As we walked we crossed paths with a woman who returned our greeting but said nothing else at all so we assumed she was another guest. We had an invitation to the manager’s cocktail party at 6.30 but there was nobody at the bar to welcome us. The aforementioned woman arrived ten minutes later so couldn’t even manage to be on time for her own party. We saw her talking to other guests, there were just 8 couples including us, but after over a half hour she still hadn’t come to greet us even though we were the only new arrivals that day. The dinner menu at the resort had no fish on it even though we are surrounded by the Caribbean so we had found a seafood place in town. We went to her to inquire about it but she didn’t know anything other than directions. In all our travels, almost 170 countries so far, she is hands down the worst resort/hotel manager. The breakfast was mediocre at best with the most pathetic fruit plate ever and watered down juice that tasted like it was a mix. The bacon, eggs and toast were good though. With just a couple of exceptions the staff were not at all friendly, which is totally unacceptable in a place like this. At the bar on our second day the manager walked past but yet again said nothing. The two worst aspects through are that it’s impossible to sleep. Right across from the island is a bar that starts playing very lounge, thumping music about 11PM and it goes on until about 6AM. Why the neighbors and hotels haven’t complained to the police is beyond us. The second thing is that there are bright lights along the paths to the rooms and with no black-out curtains it never gets dark in the bedroom. We have never been so happy to leave a place. Read less

We’ve just finished 10 nights at this beautiful island resort for our honeymoon. Where to start… The food, the staff and the scenery was 10/10. Delicious fresh food for breakfast, lunch and dinner made to order every single day. The wonderful staff deserve a shout out they really can’t do enough for you and the island itself is spectacular. Lovely views and precious flowers. The hotel itself has a real boutique feel to it and feels very exclusive perfect for a honeymoon or a couples holiday very romantic and can just be together with no interruptions like you might get at a bigger hotel. If you have mobility issues ask for a room closer to the beach as there are a few stairs. Rooms are very spacious and have private plunge pools if you desire! The decor is in keeping with the island and the beds are very comfy! I can’t wait to come back for our anniversary! Read less

There are very mixed reviews on this resort, so I would start by saying that you should not be put off by all the bad ones ! The resort location and beach are generally very tranquil and quite beautiful. The staff are fantastic, and the food very good. In its “heyday” I would imagine that the resort was absolutely stunning, but it now needs a bit of an update as the rooms and resort are a bit tired. Sadly, the noise of the clubs across the water on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights was a big issue. It went on until 5am ! Unbelievable ! I really feel for the hotel management and team as despite their efforts, it seems they can do nothing about this, and it completely contradicts the key selling point of this hotel which is tranquility. I would stay here again - but probably only mid week. I do hope that they sort out the current challenges as it is a beautiful location and the staff go along way in making up for the few shortcomings. They are great. Read less

I am really sad to write this review because I really wanted to love this hotel. However, I can honestly say it is the worst value hotel experience I have ever had. This hotel is impossible to love for 2 reasons: 1. The bed and pillows are so uncomfortable it almost feels like they deliberately want you to have a bad nights sleep 2. The noise from the beach bars opposite the hotel is unbearable. It booms across the water until 5am. I am heavy sleeper but there is simply no way you can sleep with this going on. Add to this the high prices, small, tired rooms and patchy service and I’m afraid I am still reeling from one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had. My husband’s family are Vincentian and we really wanted to tell them that we’d had a lovely time but if I had my time over, I would skip this incredible rip off and move swiftly to Bequia or Mustique for a much nicer experience. I suggest you do the same! Read less
