This is by no means a negative review. This is a great hotel in a great location with well tendered grounds. Great food and drinks and most importantly great staff. After a long journey we were met by familiar faces with a cold flannel and more importantly the famous rum punch. This is our 5th visit and did seem to lack the WOW factor we have previously experienced. Think being returning guests you are always comparing previous visits. Just a few things that niggled us this year. On occasions we repeatedly had to reorder tea and coffee at breakfast and again wine at lunch and dinner. One morning breakfast was like a 80’s karaoke and we had to request the volume was reduced so we could have a conversation. Sugar cane relies on its staff to continue the family feel we have come to enjoy, unfortunately some new staff seem to see this as more of a job and not about the customer experience. These are my views and others returnees and new guests may think differently. Shout out to Tameisha, Gregory, Rishidi and Rosedhi who went above and beyond and also Pool guy Kevin who made sure or sun beds were in place! Rooms were serviced daily with towels changed every two days and bedding on the 3rd Food was again a mix of a la carte and buffet for evening dinner. Menu for lunch with the occasional option of a barbecue. Breakfast was also buffet style. I do not rule out a return to this hotel as it has become our happy place but think a break is in order next year. Read less

Just returned (11th May) from 12 day stay at this wonderful resort. It was our 3rd trip and our friend’s 4th, so this should tell you how highly we rate the resort. Another great stay, helped by the very friendly staff especially, Gregory, David, Nikita and Rashadi to name a few. A must visit resort if you want a quiet relaxing holiday

Very quiet and peaceful hotel who accepted the excesses of our large group without blinking an eyelid! Very lovely staff right from front desk to everyone in the restaurant. Shout out to my girl Kim, kudos to Gregory and Ricardo and a big thank you to Mitlene(hope I spelt that right). You all ensured our reunion was a blast! Yes, the hotel is off the beaten path and a distance from the airport (which is actually fantastic if you're looking for a bit of peace and quiet) but in terms of value for money, you couldn't get much better! Just returned from a pleasant week here. The hotel is quite a distance from the airport (around 45 minutes, fare was US$90). The cold towel and drink on arrival was very welcome. Our suite (502) was on the top floor with a distant view ocean view, exactly as promised. Very comfortable, if a little old-fashioned perhaps, but in keeping with the “colonial” style. Efficient aircon in the bedroom area only, so other parts of the suite could be quite warm. The room seemed to be cleaned to a high standard each day. This is a small hotel set in beautiful landscaped gardens. We saw a wide variety of fauna and flora, the green monkeys even put in an appearance. Also, it’s well worth going on the Gully Walk in the company of one of the hotel gardeners. This is held twice a week and ends with him climbing a 30ft tall palm tree to bring you a freshly picked coconut to drink from ! Most meals are served in the main restaurant (breakfast is a buffet, lunch and dinner a la carte). Several evenings during the week a separate a la carte restaurant (Sandy’s Chattel House) opens its doors for dinner and that made a nice change. Also, there is a BBQ buffet by the pool on a couple of evenings instead, and some low-key entertainment which we enjoyed and which was in keeping with the very chilled atmosphere around the hotel. The food, especially the a la carte, was very good. The hamburgers served at lunchtime were truly among the best we have tasted in a long time. Drinks also good (branded spirits), but the house wine was unfortunately not quite so nice. Don’t miss the free trip in a glass bottomed boat, we were able to snorkel with turtles and even a stingray swam past us. There is also a free courtesy bus several times a day to Heywoods Beach, Speightstown and the Beach Club (also Speightstown). Heywoods Beach is beautiful but no loungers or umbrellas, and nowhere to eat or drink. The Beach Club (where hotel guests get a discount on food and drinks) lies across the road from a very narrow strip of beach near Speightstown centre. Unfortunately on the day we caught the bus there, the beach was not open as the sea was too rough, although the club itself was open. All staff were generally very polite and helpful with the odd exception (same as wherever you go). A minor irritation was sometimes ordering drinks from a server, which then simply never arrived. This happened more than once. We felt the hotel was a good choice and had a very nice atmosphere. Mainly couples from the UK in their 50s or over. Younger travellers might find it too quiet and it’s worth pointing out that there’s really nothing outside the hotel within walking distance. But if we ever return to Barbados we might consider this hotel again. Read less

We were met on arrival and given a drink and cool towel, then shown to our lovely cool room. The complex is immaculate and enjoyed sat on our balcony watching the monkeys, hummingbirds. Food was amazing but it was the staff that made this hotel special mentions to Kim, Sheena and Tamesha and Rushidi who made the best cocktails…. And the fabulous Nikita…. What a lady the biggest smile and what a voice! The free trip on glass bottom boat to see turtles was great real highlight. If you are looking for a quiet hotel, they have singers 3 times a week, with great food, it’s easy to get out and about, shuttle will take you to beaches and also to local bus station… get on the reggae bus we did great fun!
